4 Ways to Personalize Your Session | Engagement | Washington

4 ways to make your engagement photos show your personality

I will jump into it real quick here, but something I get asked a lot is how do I feel comfortable in front of the camera, or how do we bring our personality into this. Well! Here are my tips and tricks of how to make your engagement session just for you!

#1 Wardrobe

Wardrobe is the number one thing that can make your engagement session be more like your personality. I always suggest wearing outfits that make you feel comfortable or make you feel like yourself. That means colors you enjoy, patters that make you feel more like you, or even fun accessories like hats, unique jewelry or even graphic tees and creative shoes. Choosing a wardrobe that you truly feel comfortable is not only going to make your personality show but its also going to make it look like you are a MODEL! Being comfortable in your clothing is something you may not realize makes a HUGE difference.

{Story for the pic! Chris and Cameron had CUSTOM Seahawks jerseys. I feel like that is all I need to say for this one. And I guess you could look at the photos. But in addition to picking a location they brought theses jerseys to mark a moment in life of being engaged and madly in love!}

#2 Location

Picking a location that is meaningful to you and your partner is incredibly important. Things that show personality are places you enjoy, or spend lots of time at. For example if you are people who hike often, a nice woodsy spot, short hike or nature area is perfect. But if you are city people, or really enjoy a good cup of coffee, coffee shops or outdoor eating spaces can be so cute and full of fun casual vibes. Even more specifically recreating first dates.

{Story for the pic! Eric and Brooke had many of their dates early in their relationship along the hood canal, and munching on oysters at Hamma Hamma Oyster Saloon. Then one day Eric proposed there. When they were planning their engagement session with me Eric was DETERMINED to have their engagement photos taken there. SO WE DID! Hamma Hamma oyster saloon was so kind and even gave us a prime spot and allowed us to come before opening so we could shoot their photos!}

#3 Props (?)

Bring things!! Prop was the only word I could think of while writing this blog. But THINGS! Things like Dogs, Cats, Flowers, Games, Blankets, WINE! I could keep going. One of my favorite items is bringing a bottle of Champagne and popping it to spray everywhere. These can be cheesy or not. But they must be things we can incorporate into a photo without being super awkward. See photos for examples :)

{Story for the pic! Aja and Gabe have a KILLER library in their home. YES this is not a studio this IS their home!! They have this very cool customized home in what come county that they got to create to show their own true personality. They had HUNDREDS of books and everything every book, and fantasy nerd needs in their lives.}

#4 Posing

The pose is everything. Poses make the most of your photos. I will always have a little chat with my couples before going into the shoot about their personality, their style etc. Some of the questions I ask are things like “Are you silly, or maybe more serious” “Do you laugh more, or have more intellectual conversations?” This helps me understand a little bit about what vibe my clients want to give off.

{Story for the pic! I asked Hanna and Zac what their couples personality was and they said cozy and romantic. And they sure were!! They really showed their personality in the poses I supported them in. We combined all of the top three steps to making their session show their personality and it sure shined}

In Conclusion!

DO WHAT YOU WANT. It’s important that you ultimately love these photos. And I want these photos to truly shine who you are in your relationship and in your life. It is so important to bring what you need with you. And to feel relaxed, grounded and excited. I am ALWAYS around to help and create a session that works best for you!!!
