The Mini Blog Series: How To Style Your Outfit For That Photoshoot… | Arizona, PNW & Beyond

So, now that you’ve found the right photographer for you and you’ve nailed down a location (if you haven’t read my previous blogs about finding the right photog or location, click here to check ‘em out). Let’s talk about style, outfits and possibly color matching if you’re doing a family session.

Unless you’re a model, content creator or influencer most people don’t get their portraits taken very often, especially if it’s a family session. Family sessions are slightly more upscale since there’s more people involved, so outfit coordination can test anyone’s styling abilities, but it’s so rewarding in the end!! When it comes to outfit coordinations you really don’t have to have exactly match outfits for everyone like those fun Christmas cards people make with matching flannel jammies including their family dog. Here are a few tips to go off of for that subtle change but HUGE difference:

Color & Shades; if the parent(s) are wearing green then having the kids where green, regardless of pattern or material texture, is ideal. I highly recommend going for something natural, earthy and maybe complimenting shades of the same color like someone wears a dark green and another person wears a light pastel green. If the other parent is wearing jeans or denim then having another kid also wear jeans or denim is perfect!!

Material & Texture; if you’re trying to keep it super simple with minimal colors then focus on the same material, depending on the age of your kids and if you purchase or make your own clothes, this could be more challenging to find. Linen or cashmere are both such beautiful, flowy and luxurious fabrics, it would create such a seamless aesthetic when capturing portraits of everyone wearing the same material.

Brands & Trends; if you and your family wanna do a fun trendy or brand representing session, it would be so cute for everyone to get super matchy-matchy, wearing Nike, Adidas, Puma, Calvin Klein, etc, or if you know of a smaller boutique that does matching outfits for humans of all shapes and sizes that would be a great way to support a small business as well.

Overall, styling a shoot shouldn’t be stressful, make it a fun thing to look forward to like finding that last piece to the coolest puzzle. In the end outfit coordination goes such a long way and elevates your photos so much more, making them feel that much more timeless and something to admire for years to come!! Want to know more?
